I believe that the railroads played a key part in the establishment of the West, this was due to Push factors.
The Push Factors were Land, Gold, Religion(Mormons), Farming and "Manifest Destiny", this factors motivated people to move West and due to the establishment of the railroads, transport was a lot more faster and safer.
Explain what the term 'push factors' means! Don't assume that everyone knows the meaning of this geographical feature!
The plains was a vast grass land with plenty of space and buffalo herds as a form of a food resource. The East on the other hand was becoming over crowded after the Civil War, many soldiors had no jobs, many black slaves were free and very little land was left to farm.
Good paragraph. Include some dates for context.
After the Civil war the the grat Plains became a key target for many people to move to the West and deeper to start a new life as a Homesteader, to ensure the survival of the Religion (Mormons) and to complete their "Manifest Destiny".
'Manifest destiny' needs expanding upon, and it was not a Mormon issue.
Properganda motivated many people including farmers to move to the plains and the unemployed to start a new life.
The government also played their part and established an Homesteader Act of 1862 which allowed them to obtain a certain 160 acres of land for free or for a cheaper price. Another Act known as Culture Act 1873 gave new settlers a further 160 acres of land.
Good - you'll be surprised at how many students leave out this important information. Do some research and get the figures for the number of people who took up these offers.
The Railroads made the establishment of the West a lot more easier, due to that fact that is was able to transport supplies a lot more quicker than on foot, this played another key part in "Manifest Destiny".
The Railroads allowed the Mormons to transport to unknown areas to conclude the survival of the Mormons, they moved to a place know known as New Mexico. They were hated by the public, even their leader Josheph Smith was brutally murdered in his own cell in prison, it was unsafe for them so the were forced to move east by a new leader known as Brigham Younge.
NB - The Mormons were moving West a long time before the completion of the railroads. Do some research and learn about the great movement west led by Brigham Young, and the use of handcarts...besides, look at the time period this exam question wants you to focus upon.
Many Black slaves moved West to start a new life as Cowboy or any other available job i Kansas. Unemployment was a seriouse problem after the Civil war many came back without a home or job, this forced many other Americans to move West. Also a large number of immigrants came to the plains from England, Ireland, Scandinavia, Russia and other europian countries.
Numbers would be good. Find them on the internet.
The Gold Rushs influnced people to move West to obtain their richs of Gold to make them wealthy this occured in places such as Dakota (Black Hills), Colorado and Wyoming.
However there are negative sides to move West, for farmers especially Homesteaders it became extremly hard to farm due to lack of water, harsh weather, disease, Light and unfertille soil.
Also this contributed into more contacts with the Sioux Indians which increased the conflicts they had with the White settlers.
A clear high level two response as its in good detail, however much of it is irrelevant - the question asks about migration AFTER 1865, and you must only write about that. 9/15
