Transportation was used as a form of punishment to get people out of England. As more and more criminals came about prisons started to become full and the government knew they couldn't just keep executing people for minor crimes. Their solution to the problem was to ship criminals over to Australia where they would work like slaves building buildings and mineing raw materials. Many criminals who were shiped over to Australia didn't make the journey, alot of them died on the way over. Once a criminal had served their time in australia they could, if they wanted pay to sail back to Britain.
Another reason why britan was eagar to send more criminals over to Australia was because it wasn't only the british that were interested in Australia, so britain wanted to get as many people as possible on the continent.

Trasportation was introduced for many reasons. For 100 years the criminals had been trasported to America but America was Independence therefore they denied the criminals. Criminals were transported into Australia which nobody knew about. That was one of the reasons. The goverment thought that being sent to an unknown place was scary and criminals won't do it again. Another reason was that the goverment needed another punishment apart from hanging for small crimes as hanging was considered too extreme for crimes like theft. Aftall all most of the people trasported were thevies. Also the goverment was keen to get people to australia to make it part of the british empire.

Transportation was introduced as a punishment because the government felt that Sending the prisoner to an unknown place on the other side of the world called Australia, The government thought this would stop people from commiting crimes. They sent them by ship which they called a hulk, it took aroun 3-4-5 months before they arrived in Australia. Many of the prisoners died on the journey from starvation and also being beaten to death by a police officer. The British government wanted British citizens in Australia because they wanted to have a British Army base in Australia.

As with all punishments transportation was a form of deterring criminals from commiting crime but transportation was the result of over-crowded prisons, a a change in punishment and also seperating criminals from the public. England fast becoming more overcrowded both in side prison and out and not enough accomadation for people meaning an increase in crime, Capital punishment was the main punishment of the time but wasn't cutting crime down so a new plan for punishment was introduced, it being transportation where criminals were reformed by working hand in another of the British colonies. Transportation had two main advantages for Britain, one being criminals were taken away for up to 14 years and rich and powerful Brittish people were able to develope the country.
