This was one of the main reasons. There were many other such as manifest denestiny and homesteaders. The american popoluation in the plains was due the homesteaders. The goverment offered acres of land for anyone who started a living there. Many railroads such as the oregen trail went through the plains. THis allowed cattle to be transported to the states where there was a high demand for beef.

Use your notes!!!! For a start - what about the various Acts that Congress passed to encourage homesteaders - you only touched upon this.

The railroads enabled people to move west but there were many other reasons why people moved west. Those reasons are: persecution (Mormons), poverty, adventure, gold, Manifest Destiny, government encoragement and properganda.
The growth of the railroads was a large reason why so many people moved west in the usa after the end of the civil war because before the railroads the journey to the west was harsh and long. the railroads enabled people to get accross the plains easily and fairly cheaply. this ment that it was now possible for normal families to move to the west to start a new life.
The government wanted people to spread accross the continebt so they introduced the Homestead Act and the Timber and Culture Act which both gave land to people fro free as long as they promised to farm the land for 5 years and plant 50 acres of land with trees. These acts by the government gave oppertunities to families to start new lives with the promise of free land which encouraged many people to move west, those people were know as Homesteaders.
People were also pushed away from the east to ward the west for their beliefs. The Mormons were very unpopular and were forced out of every city they went to and they finally decied to move west but they did not use the railways because it was not there at the time. However they managed to make it west alive and create their own city which prospered.
Evidence shows me that people were tarvelling to the west before the railways but after the railways were put in palce it was easier to move west and many more people moved west. This shows that the railways were a huge help to the population of the west but not the biggest. This is because without the Acts from the government and the push factors that people faced the railways would have become abandoned because nobody would want to move west if they had no incentive.

i would have included something about The Oregon Trail but we havnt dont that in class and i havnt got around to reading the revision stuff on it (if there is any, havent checked)

Very good - the over-riding thing is that you are structuring your answer really well, it reads fluidly and takes the reader along without going backwards and forwards. To take it to a Level 4 you need to be a lot more specific with your relevant historical facts and figures. 'Not doing something in class' is never an excuse - remember that all A/A* students show evidence of FURTHER READING AND RESEARCH that goes beyond lesson notes/textbooks....Level 3, 11 out of 15.

11/15 is an alright result, what would that be in grades (A*,A,B?)
and i planned on looking over the stuff we havnt learnt yet next week. This week is revision on stuff we learned ages ago which ive forgotten.

11/15 at this stage is very alright - well done! The exact grade can't be determined, as the grade curve varies from year to year - it could be a B, or it could be an A, depends on what everyone else gets. The important thing is to consistently hit the top of Level 3 in your answers, that guarantees at least a B, and more likely an A.
I'll put up a guide to the GCSE marking levels here soon - remember they differ from the KS3 levels which went from 1-7, these GCSE levels only go from 1-4.
Keep at it - glad to see someone is revising smartly already.

The building of the railroads was one of many reasons why people started to settle on the plains. The end of the civil war meant that hundreds of soldiers needed somewhere to live and earn a living. There wasn't enough room in the towns to allow all the soldiers to live their, therefore they had to go and live out on the plains. This angered the indians, because their home was being taken over by the whites. Another reason why people were moving on to the plains was because more and more people were immigrating to America from Europe, and the government needed somewhere to put them. All these things that were happening in parts of America were causing the Indians problems. This led to many battles taking place because the Americans were beginning to over run the Indians.

I believe that the railroads played a key part in the establishment of the West, this was due to Push factors.
The Push Factors were Land, Gold, Religion(Mormons), Farming and "Manifest Destiny", this factors motivated people to move West and due to the establishment of the railroads, transport was a lot more faster and safer.
The plains was a vast grass land with plenty of space and buffalo herds as a form of a food resource. The East on the other hand was becoming over crowded after the Civil War, many soldiors had no jobs, many black slaves were free and very little land was left to farm.
After the Civil war the the grat Plains became a key target for many people to move to the West and deeper to start a new life as a Homesteader, to ensure the survival of the Religion (Mormons) and to complete their "Manifest Destiny".
Properganda motivated many people including farmers to move to the plains and the unemployed to start a new life.
The government also played their part and established an Homesteader Act of 1862 which allowed them to obtain a certain 160 acres of land for free or for a cheaper price. Another Act known as Culture Act 1873 gave new settlers a further 160 acres of land.
The Railroads made the establishment of the West a lot more easier, due to that fact that is was able to transport supplies a lot more quicker than on foot, this played another key part in "Manifest Destiny".
The Railroads allowed the Mormons to transport to unknown areas to conclude the survival of the Mormons, they moved to a place know known as New Mexico. They were hated by the public, even their leader Josheph Smith was brutally murdered in his own cell in prison, it was unsafe for them so the were forced to move east by a new leader known as Brigham Younge.
Many Black slaves moved West to start a new life as Cowboy or any other available job i Kansas. Unemployment was a seriouse problem after the Civil war many came back without a home or job, this forced many other Americans to move West. Also a large number of immigrants came to the plains from England, Ireland, Scandinavia, Russia and other europian countries.
The Gold Rushs influnced people to move West to obtain their richs of Gold to make them wealthy this occured in places such as Dakota (Black Hills), Colorado and Wyoming.
However there are negative sides to move West, for farmers especially Homesteaders it became extremly hard to farm due to lack of water, harsh weather, disease, Light and unfertille soil.
Also this contributed into more contacts with the Sioux Indians which increased the conflicts they had with the White settlers.

Not bad Darren. You've mentioned many of the key factors, however far too briefly. I would have needed a lot more relevant facts and details, in particular addressing the question's topic - the railroads. For this reason I can only award it a low level two - a D grade. 5/15

Explain what the term 'push factors' means! Don't assume that everyone knows the meaning of this geographical feature!
The plains was a vast grass land with plenty of space and buffalo herds as a form of a food resource. The East on the other hand was becoming over crowded after the Civil War, many soldiors had no jobs, many black slaves were free and very little land was left to farm.
Good paragraph. Include some dates for context.
After the Civil war the the grat Plains became a key target for many people to move to the West and deeper to start a new life as a Homesteader, to ensure the survival of the Religion (Mormons) and to complete their "Manifest Destiny".
'Manifest destiny' needs expanding upon, and it was not a Mormon issue.
Good - you'll be surprised at how many students leave out this important information. Do some research and get the figures for the number of people who took up these offers.
NB - The Mormons were moving West a long time before the completion of the railroads. Do some research and learn about the great movement west led by Brigham Young, and the use of handcarts...besides, look at the time period this exam question wants you to focus upon.
Numbers would be good. Find them on the internet.
A clear high level two response as its in good detail, however much of it is irrelevant - the question asks about migration AFTER 1865, and you must only write about that. 9/15

noooo i should have done better than that lol oh well ill jus keep on trien

but i hope it is a B

With a 15 mark question the scores on the doors would work out as:
Out of 15
1-4 Level 1 G-D
5-8 Level 2 D-C
9-12 Level 3 C-A
13-15 Level 4 A-A*
However this is vague and depends on how everyone else who does the exam does - the Bell Curve - C grade could be between 45 and 55 percent.
You scored a high C. Little bit more would be a B.
