Source 1: Video - Battle for Iwo Jima
The Battle of Iwo Jima was fought during February and March of 1945, during the Pacific Campaign of World War II. As a result of the battle, the United States gained control of the island of Iwo Jima, and the airfields located there. The defenders were well entrenched and instructed to defend the island to the last man. Both sides suffered heavy losses; of the 22,000 Japanese troops stationed on the island, only 1083 survived, with the US losing a total of 6,821 men in the battle. Despite intense resistance, the American troops captured the highest point, Mount Suribachi, in the first week of fighting. Iwo Jima was of strategic importance to the United States providing a landing/re-fuelling site for American bombers on missions to and from Japan

Jot down these questions to think about as you watch the 4-minute film:
What was the role of the US Navy at the start of the operation?
How did the Japanese fight back against the ships?
How did the US Marines get onto the island?
    What were the flamethrowers for?
