Why did the number of trials for witchcraft grow to a peak in the mid-seventeenth century? Explain your answer.

You could include the following and any other information of your own.

    The first law against witchcraft was in 1542.
    King James's book on witchcraft was published in 1597.
    Matthew Hopkins called himself the Witchfinder General.
